The cliff-clutching, one-way Alpine Loop Scenic Byway in southwestern Colorado crosses two high passes and connects Lake City with Silverton and Ouray. Travelers, including those new to four-wheeling, find the 65-mile route stimulating but seldom threatening. Many people like to take their time and overnight in one of the loop's corner towns.

Museum tells story of Nevada as nuclear test site
LAS VEGAS – The movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has rekindled interest in the Cold War atomic tests. Those experiments sent 100 mushroom clouds into the skies near Las Vegas from 1951 to 1962, and then shook it with underground tests until 1992, when testing was halted. In all, 928 blasts were triggered over, at and above the Nevada Test Site. Located just 65 miles north of the Strip, it's probably the most nuclear-bombed site in the world.
